George and Barbara were the longest-married presidential First Couple. They celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary on January 6, 2018, three months and eleven days before Barbara's death.
Ancestry was English, some German, and smaller amounts, to varying degrees, of Welsh, Irish, Scottish, and French, as well as 1/128th Moravian (Czech).
Recovering at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas after successful open heart surgery on March 4, 2009 to replace her aortic valve. In late November, 2008, she underwent surgery to treat a perforated ulcer in her small intestine. Also has had operations for back problems and two hip replacements.
In September 2005, she and her husband were touring a shelter housing people who had fled Hurricane Katrina. She said "Oh, these people were already underprivileged, so this is better for them," drawing allegations that she held an elitist viewpoint.
