Taylor Hackford is an American film director, producer, and writer. He is best known for his Academy Award-winning film Ray (2004). He has also directed films such as An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), White Nights (1985), The Devil's Advocate (1997), and Proof of Life (2000). Hackford was born in Santa Barbara, California, the son of Mary (née Taylor), a waitress, and Joseph Hackford. He graduated from the University of Southern California in 1968, where he was a pre-law major. He then attended the USC School of Cinema-Television, where he graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1971. Hackford began his career as a production assistant on films such as The Sting (1973) and Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver (1976). He then moved up the ranks to become a producer and director. His first feature film as a director was the 1977 romantic drama The Idolmaker, starring Ray Sharkey. Hackford has been married twice. His first marriage was to actress Helen Mirren from 1997 to 2000. He is currently married to producer and former actress Lisa Marie Hackford, with whom he has two children.
