Hidde Ploegh is a Dutch biochemist and molecular biologist. He is best known for his work on the development of monoclonal antibodies and the discovery of the enzyme endoglycosidase H. He was born on 7 January 1953 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Ploegh received his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Amsterdam in 1979. He then went on to do postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1984, he joined the faculty of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at MIT, where he is currently a professor of biology. Ploegh has made numerous contributions to the field of biochemistry and molecular biology. He is credited with the discovery of the enzyme endoglycosidase H, which is involved in the processing of proteins. He has also developed a number of monoclonal antibodies, which are used in research and medical applications. Ploegh has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences Award for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2000, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Award for Excellence in Science in 2002, and the National Academy of Sciences Award for Scientific Discovery in 2004. In 1986 Ploegh became a member of EMBO. In 1997 Ploegh became a correspondent of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2016 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
Ploegh, a native of the Netherlands, received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1975, and a Master of Science degree in biology and chemistry in 1977, from the University of Groningen. Having worked for six months in Jack Strominger's lab at that time, he was able to continue his PhD studies under Strominger and received a doctorate from the University of Leiden. Ploegh would then go on to hold positions at a number of institutions such as the University of Cologne, the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Utrecht University (2012-2015), and Harvard Medical School, before becoming a member of the Whitehead Institute.
Hidde Lolke Ploegh (born 7 January 1953) is an immunologist at Boston Children's Hospital, known for his contributions in understanding antigen processing and the evasion of the immune system by viruses.
