She was born on April 22, 1980 in Canyon, Texas, United States. Whitaker attended Canyon High School in Canyon, Texas, where she was a four-year letter winner in basketball and volleyball. She was named the Texas Girls Coaches Association Player of the Year in 1998. She then attended Texas Tech University, where she was a four-year starter and was named the Big 12 Player of the Year in 2002. Whitaker was drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks in the first round of the 2002 WNBA Draft. She has played for the Sparks since then, and has been a part of two WNBA championship teams (2002 and 2016). She was also named to the WNBA All-Star team in 2006. Whitaker is married to former NBA player and current ESPN analyst Mark Jackson. They have two children together.
